...why Lauren Clay ended up sleeping in the family bed. Last night at about 3AM we put Ty down to sleep in his bed on his back. He had on a onesie and a pair of pants (over a diaper, of course), and was swaddled tightly. He cried a few minutes, but not quite 10. So I drifted off to sleep. At 3:45ish he was crying and the wails kept getting louder, so I checked on him to find that he had wiggled out of the swaddle, the pants AND the diaper. I put on a sleeping gown, baby legs (little leg warmers), socks, and a diaper and we all fell asleep again... for maybe half an hour. At 5ish I awoke to more crying, and found Ty with the socks, baby legs and diaper off again. At about 6:15 this morning I decided that the reason the SIDS rate is lower in babies put on their backs to sleep is that they don't sleep at night, so they get their good sleep during the day when parents are watching them. Any ideas or suggestions on helping a baby sleep on his back once he's strong enough to wiggle out of a swaddle (and everything else he's wearing?!)
We're still having fun family time around here (in spite of the long nights.) I've had lots of sleep opportunities during the day, so I'm pretty rested overall. I'm off all pain meds now and only have minimal discomfort at the incision. I've been thumbing through Runner's World magazines and have been itching to get out and start running again. It'll probably be late December before I'm cleared to hit the roads for a run, but I'm looking forward to it (it'll be a nice Christmas gift!) I think the running will help level out blood pressure, which is still kind of high. In the meantime, we're using medication to keep IT in check.
Lauren Clay continues to enjoy being the big sister and loves having her dad around. She and John are reading a book right now as I type this entry. This morning she put Goofy into Ty's bouncy seat to cuddle with her little brother. She put a blue and pink blanket over their toes and then read them a few books. She's doing better being gentle, although we still have to watch her very closely.
She has gotten to do some special things on her own during the past week. I think I wrote about her trip to Knoxville with mom and dad (she continues to talk about the zoo. Tells us often about the animals she saw: "I saw the meerkat! I saw the monkeys! I saw the hippo!" Last night she said, "I saw the Corny Horns! They're big, mommy." Turns out, the corny horns were the antelope-type animal with CURLY horns. As another big sister treat, John and I took her to see The Bee Movie with Bobby and Libby. She loved it. She has carried her little "Barry" with her everywhere.
I had hoped to post pictures, but Ty is hungry and I can't type and feed him at the same time (yet.) I'll try to get some pics up before the end of the day.

I can't believe Ty was able to wiggle out of his swaddle, pants and diaper! How in the world? Are his pants tight? What about the diaper? Do you have one of those baby monitors w/ the video? I would love to know how he is doing that... you may have a future wrestler in the brew! I laughed out loud about the "sleeping on back prevents sids b/c they can't sleep" comment. How true. Did Lauren Clay sleep on her tummy? We all slept on our tummies and we turned out OK... I put Seth on his back, but I may try the tummy for my next child.
When you start running, I want to start too -- SERIOUSLY! I have got to get back in shape. I am not a "gym" person and the only thing I have done in the past is run. (I just accidently typed rum -- that too!) Loved the corny horns comment. I have not run in years -- coming upon twenty -- since my high school reunion is coming up. I doubt it but maybe with you coming off your second pregnancy I could keep up as you start running again. Tomorrow is Thursday and then I am home free for a few days so I will talk to you then. akml
what about those blanket sleepers that you put on over their pajamas? i used them with skb b/c she wouldn't stay in a swaddle either. however, she was a tummy sleeper like the rest of my girls. i tried the back, but she just startled herself awake all the time. anyway, i know they are endorsed by the sids prevention people. i think mel may have some that i handed down from skb for reed if you want to try that. they just zip up and don't have sleeves (or you can buy them with sleeves and just put a onesie underneath.)
ok, off to make saturday morning pancakes!
