We've had a great day today. Lauren Clay loved having her dad around for his day off. They played a sort of hide and seek, where Lauren Clay would go to the couch and John would hide. Then she'd go looking for him, and he'd jump out from where he was hiding and tickle her. Every time he did it, she responded the same: her mouth in a wide-open smile, a scream, and then hysterical laughter. I finally went to the grocery store after deep cleaning the refrigerator (it feels so good to open a freshly scoured and well stocked fridge.) Lauren Clay spent a little while with her grandparents at the pool, then they all returned here for chicken on the grill, fresh tomatoes from the neighbors' garden, and some vegetables and rice.
We've had a difficult evening, though, and I have no idea why. We've been doing the bedtime routine consistently for a week now. While we have still had to put her back into bed 4 to 6 times each night, she's stayed in there for long stretches and has been more willing to go down each night. Tonight seemed like it was going to be great. She took a bath, brushed teeth, talked to nana and papa on the phone, read a few books, said prayers, then I put her in bed (and she was struggling to keep her eyes open.) That was at 8:15. It's now almost 9:40 and I am taking a break from putting her back in bed because I'm exhausted. It's like she's playing a game tonight. No sooner would I put her in bed than she would be sliding back out. She didn't cry until probably 9, but by that time, I'd returned her to bed probably 60 times. John took over a few minutes ago and she is now saying, "I want mommy!" over and over again, and she's getting more and more worked up. Uh oh... I just heard something hit the floor after it must have been hurled across the room. She's going to have to give up eventually; hopefully before we do!
Update: She finally fell asleep at 9:55. John held her a little and rocked her a little, and she finally went to sleep while he was changing her diaper. She is now on her back, in diaper changing position with her legs hanging over the side of the bed. We'll position her more comfortably in a bit, but not before we're sure she's fast asleep!

I will be short and sweet and just say...right there with ya! From the other toddler battlefield down the road...do you think they will put historical markers up at our houses some day for the battles that have been fought here or just maybe there will be markers because they became presidents or nobel peace prize winners or great human beings; all because they had loving and consistent parents.....ok, well, I can't be short and sweet but "let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart" ......You guys are doing a great job!
