The family is sleeping in this morning after a fun evening out last night. Ty set a personal record of sleeping 8 hours last night. He woke up at 7 to eat, and it looks like he's drifting off for a little more shut eye (he's a great sleeper and an easy one to get onto a schedule. I know we're responsible for some of the scheduling success, but I think a lot of it is personality. Lauren Clay was just spunky when it came to sleep, and I didn't consistently persist in getting the schedule down. While she's always been a difficult sleeper, at least she'll eat almost anything and try most everything.) Lauren Clay and John are still asleep, but I woke up at 6:15 and decided to use the time to catch up on friends' blogs and update ours.
Last night we decided to head to Tony Roma's for dinner (If you're looking for a scrumptious carryout burger, that's the best place in town to order one.) We thought we'd run out and grab a bite early (5:30), then run by the AT&T store to pick out new phones. It was almost 7 before we headed out the door, and if we'd had any leftovers in the fridge, I'm sure we would have decided to throw in the towel and stay in. I'm glad we got out, but here's what happened as we were trying to get out the door:
Lauren Clay needed to go to the potty, but somehow she miscalculated where to sit and fell in the toilet. I got really tickled because she was basically in pike position with her knees touching her nose. She didn't find it humorous at all. She kept crying, "I have pee pee all over." I moved her from the toilet bowl to the shower and cleaned her up, but she had moved into meltdown mode, and spent the next hour in tears over one thing or another.
We finally had Lauren Clay ready to leave, so I ran in to do a quick diaper change for Ty. Within seconds of sealing the clean diaper, he filled it to overflowing... so I had to wipe him down, change his clothes and throw the changing pad cover in the hamper. When I picked him up, he spit up all over both of us (he looked like he had a white mustache and beard; I was soaked.) Meanwhile, Lauren Clay was trying to replace her brown Stride Rite shoes with her sequined "glass slippers," and when John went to stop her, she threw herself onto the floor screaming, knocking her head on the crib in the process. John picked her up to soothe her and figured he could cheer her up by letting her feed the fish; when he opened the cover, it fell into the tank and went straight to the bottom. That's when we decided we should probably just stay home, but none of us was in the mood to try to concoct dinner without any easy options on hand.
I'm glad we pushed through to get out the door. The meal was great, and it turns out that one of our neighbors-- the one who handed out full candy bars on Halloween-- is the manager there. We'd never actually met him, but we made the connection and he probably talked with us a total of 20 minutes at different times in our meal. He also sent out an appetizer on the house. Good dinner, and the evening ended quietly and with a long night of sleep for everyone.
A few of the latest happenings:
-Lauren Clay is still in diaper when we go out, but she now asks to go to the potty when we are away from the house. We're so so close to moving size 5 diapers out of the budget considerations!
-When Lauren Clay has a scratch or a tummy ache, she'll say "I want to make it feel much better."
-A couple days ago she was sitting at the computer with me and said, "I want to touch the Jesus key." I asked her which key she was talking about, and she pointed to the plus sign (+). Isn't that intuitive?! She talks a lot about Jesus these days. Yesterday in the car she was trying to remember who Jesus' mommy was. I told her it was Mary and she said, "oh yeah, Mary and Joseph." Then she told me Jesus has a mustache. Then she said he's scary (sometimes she tells us things to see if we're listening. She'll say it multiple times until we realize-- and acknowledge-- that she's kidding.) Hopefully she's either kidding or beginning her journey toward wisdom as she internalizes Proverbs 1:7 :)
-Ty is smiling all the time now, squealing and cooing, in response to people. In addition to becoming increasingly interactive, he is also a very contemplative baby. He will sit and look at a pattern for a long time. Sometimes I'll think he's asleep in his bed, but I'll find him looking at the raised dots on the bumper or staring at a toy on his mobile.
-Classes are going well. Better this week than last, although my undergrads are acting like the workload is unbearable. Interestingly, I cut the workload down by about a third from last semester... so maybe that's just how undergrads operate. I have a very interesting mix of students this semester. They come from all over the U.S. (including CA, MI, TX, MA) and they attended a wide range of high schools (one had a graduating class of 85, and one had a graduating class of 1000.) Those stats make for interesting discussions about education. On the fun side-- my Massachusetts student's family owns the Joe's diner featured in this Norman Rockwell piece. I also have the current Miss Kentucky in class, so we'll be cheering her on when she goes for the Miss USA title in the spring.
-Finally, AnneMiriam is the newest family member (daughter of my only paternal cousin, Hunter.) Lauren Clay likes to talk about her new cousin, and I love how she says the name. I will try to catch her saying it on video. Meanwhile, here's Ty this morning:

Sorry we didn't get to chat more after church tonight but now I feel like I am caught up! We took Libby out for dinner Thursday night and she wanted to know who was going with us -- guess the parents only doesn't cut it for her, thought we had a little more time before this.
Today we took her to see the new Veggietales movie and again, when it was just us going she wasn't very interested. But when MaMa called and said they were going to a movie, she invited them to come with us. My father could not resist his precious granddaughter -- they will have to go see "The Bucket List" some other time!
The girls looked like they were having so much fun in the concourse tonight -- long lost friends! If you ever need sometime in the morning with just you and Ty, give me a holler and we can take Lauren Clay.
I'm off to take down the tree and watch the UK game -- I despise 9pm games! Exciting news about football, huh?! FYI The Explorium is open for free on Monday, MLK day, and I am thinking of taking Libby if you all care to join us.
